In the bridge, the chaos of the distorted guitars and intense drums is combined with the (once again) Gregorian chant-like harmonies to make a haunting tone that is full of angst. It all blends over smoothly in the chorus, when the vocals utilize two harmonies over a clear guitar and easier drums. The verse is staccato and almost sharp at first, with the silence between chords and words. The intro starts out simple, with a guitar and drums that slowly build up towards the climax, a climax that seems to drag out over the chaos of the verse. Then, there is the heavy distortion of the guitar, open hi-hat of the drums, and the yelling in your face. There is the slower strumming and arpeggio chords of the guitar along with the clear vocals. There is the electric guitars and the acoustic guitars.
I would like to say that there are two main tone colors in the song. However, the tempo is the same throughout the song. The impact that the strumming of the guitar has along with the drums make it seem as if the song is rubato, speeding up and slowing down in transitions of the various sections. The form seems chaotic, it sounds like there is a key change from chorus to verse and also a tempo change.
Between each section of the song the singer goes from frantically yelling to singing a eerie Gregorian chant like harmonies. This is a very basic What makes the form interesting is how distinct each section of the song is. There is an intro, verse one, chorus, pre-verse riff, verse 2, chorus, pre-bridge riff, bridge, outro. “Grab a brush and put a little makeup/ Hide the scars to fade away the shakeup” Form The emotional journey that the song takes you on is mesmerizing. It was definitely one of the songs that made me fall in love with the band and their frantic music. Personally, this was one of the first songs that I heard by SOAD. It is the band’s most popular song with 252,616,326 plays on Spotify and 671M views on YouTube. The song is off of their Toxicity album in 2001.
Thus, the band decided for Chop Suey. Allegedly, because the Chinese stew describes their musical style with lots of stuff thrown together. Furthermore, McKenna writes, “though most popular rock acts avoid political screeds, SOAD is full of ’em.” SOAD not only sings about political topics, but they also create awareness for topics they are passionate about.Ĭhop Suey was originally titled Self-Righteous Suicide ( Grow, 2016), however the record company disagreed.
